Middle schoolers will make images to express themselves.
They have questions.
You might have answers.
An image.
A question.
A conversation.
Youth representation through photovoice.
As a photographer and a public school teacher, I hear our students. They are aware of the world around them, but they have little power over the decisions adults make. They want to talk, to communicate, to have their voices heard.
Through this photovoice project, I invite members of the community into a dialogue with our youth. Students will create analog photographs and use a typewriter to mark the images, add their words, and strengthen their message. They will ask adults to respond and to be held accountable. This is the project.
Community members are invited to look, listen, and share a response. Together, the photographs, questions, and replies become a conversation, with an exhibition planned for April 2027.

Spring 2026
Test run
We tested the first edition. Working with analog photography proved challenging.
-
Summer 2026
Enter the typewriter.
Students took naturally to the typewriter. The words came out, and they found it easier to express themselves.
-
Fall 2026We are here
We’re back.
We’re back, building on what we learned in the first edition. The project is moving again.
-
Let’s start talking.
We hope to have conversations started between students and community members.
-
Conversation in public
We plan to start sharing news of the exhibition and invite the community to take part.
-
Theory becomes concrete
The show is planned for April. The photographs, typed words, and community responses will be there together.
-
The future
Keep the conversation going
We want the project to continue, with another edition and more students and community members taking part.
A photograph
as a conversation.
Young people have much to tell us. We invite you to look at their photographs, listen to their questions, and share your response. Let’s talk.
