Part of Touchstone Gallery's 50 for 50 Series · July 22–27, 2026

Touchstone Tintype Studio

Reserve a handmade wet plate collodion portrait inside a working tintype studio at Touchstone Gallery.

As part of Touchstone Gallery's 50th anniversary celebration, I will install a working tintype studio inside the gallery and create portraits throughout the week.

The project echoes the tintype portraits Allan Janus created for his 1976 exhibition at Touchstone, held in conjunction with the Smithsonian's 1876 Centennial celebrations. Fifty years later, the historic process returns to the gallery, creating a living connection between Touchstone's past and present while inviting today's community to become part of its ongoing story.

Finished tintypes will not leave with you on the day of your session. Each portrait will join the installation, gradually populating the gallery walls throughout the week.

You may pick up your plate during the final studio session on Monday, July 27, or have it delivered to you by USPS after the event.

Sessions are 30 minutes. Advance booking is recommended to guarantee your preferred time. Walk-ins are welcome during studio hours when space permits, but availability cannot be guaranteed.

There is no booking deposit for this event. Payment is due at the time of your portrait session.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance so the slot can be offered to someone else.

Learn more about the exhibition on the Touchstone Gallery website .
